Screw Terminations
Screw terminals rely on mechanical pressure. The wire, stripped or fitted with a ferrule or ring/fork terminal, is placed under the head of a screw (or a clamping plate) which is then tightened to hold the conductor securely.
Advantages:
- Easily Reworkable: Connections can be quickly loosened and re-tightened, making them ideal for testing, prototyping, and maintenance.
- Simple Tooling: Requires only a standard screwdriver, making them accessible.
- Handles Large Gauges: Often the best choice for connecting heavy-gauge power wires.
Disadvantages:
- Vibration Loosening: Mechanical connections can loosen over time, especially in high-vibration settings, leading to high resistance or intermittent faults.
- Wire Damage: Overtightening can shear the screw or damage the wire strands.
- Air Exposure: The connection is not fully sealed, allowing the conductor to oxidize over time, increasing resistance.
The right choice isn’t just about what’s strongest or easiest, it’s about matching the termination method to the environment, current/voltage requirements, service needs, and expected lifespan of the project. A careful assessment of these factors ensures a reliable and professional result every time.
