Universal Serial Bus (USB) is one of the standardised interfaces for connecting peripheral devices to a computer system. The USB has gone through three revisions since its inception USB 2.0 which has a top speed of 480Mbps, USB 3.0 with a top speed of 5Gbps and the latest USB 3.1 with its top speed of 10Gbps. USB 2.0 and 3.0 are available with Type A or Type B connectors, while USB 3.1 is dedicated to USB Type C connectors. A USB or Universal Serial Bus is a standardised interface for connecting peripheral devices to a computer system. As a general rule the peripheral device would have a USB plug while the device would incorporate the socket.

There are three main types of USB connectors these are type A, B and C. USB types A and B can also be broken down into subcategories. Full size, known simply as Type A and Type B, USB Mini A and Mini B which have a smaller size body and Micro A and Micro B which are the smallest USB type. All these types come in two speeds USB2.0 with speeds of 480Mbp/s and USB3.0 which usually has a blue colour within the connector and transfer speeds of 5Gb/s. There is also a style of connector called USB Micro B Super speed which is a larger dual style connector specially designed for higher speeds. The newest and fastest type of USB is USB 3.1 Type C which has a transfer speed of 10Gb/s.

There are 8 different Types of USB Connectors. These are Type A, Type B, Type C, Mini A, Mini B, Micro A, Micro B and Micro B Super Speed. Of these the most common types are Types A, B, C, and Micro B.

The main difference between USB Type A and Type B is their shape. Both are available in USB2.0 (480Mbps) or USB3.0 (5Gbps) with the Type A connector being rectangular in shape and used as the standard port on most computers for connecting peripherals. The Type B connector is squarer than Type A with a rounded top and they are predominantly used for connecting to printers, scanners and some styles of external hard drive.

A Micro USB connector is the smallest style of Type A and Type B connectors. They are used for both data and power transfer. Micro Type B is by far the most common micro USB connector, these are generally found within mobile phones, tablets, external hard drives and digital cameras.
