Tact (or Tactile) switches are very small pushbutton switches which are designed to be mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB). They are frequently used in conjunction with a printed overlay, through which the switches are operated. As such, they can provide a low-cost, easily-maintained alternative to a membrane switch assembly. Available with surface mount or through-hole termination, they can be illuminated or non-illuminated. Tact switches generally have short travel with a tactile feedback (click) and momentary, push-to-make (SPST) contact configuration.
A Keyboard switch is very similar to a tact switch but is specifically designed for use on a keyboard. Because of this, they generally have longer travel and a quieter action than tact switches. They can have latching or momentary switching action, and are also available with or without illumination.
Detect switches are designed to “detect” the movement of an object or mechanism, such as opening or closing a hinged product, eg a laptop lid. They are usually designed with built-in overtravel, to prevent them from being damaged during use.
