Frequently Asked Questions about Circular Connectors

Circular connectors are a style of electrical connector that all have a circular body shape. This allows for a plug and socket to mate (fit together) in a variety of different ways such as screwing or a bayonet style fitting. Circular connectors have a wide range of different contact numbers and layouts and they are often waterproof, making them ideal for many different applications from scientific instruments to robust military equipment.

The shell size of a connector relates to the diameter of the connector housing. The shell size designation varies between different manufacturers, with some referring to the maximum external diameter of the connector housing and others using the mating or panel cut out size to indicate the connector diameter. MIL-SPEC connectors also have their own specific size guide standards.

There are many thousands of connector types used around the world from mini tamiya style which can be found in many remote controlled models (RC cars and planes) to robust heavy-duty connectors used for high current applications (eg. electrical transformers). For simplicity we will only mention the connector types carried by Live Electronics Ltd.
